New Black Nike Lunar Trainers

My old white Nike Lunar Trainer shoes have reached 400miles (640Kms), which means they need to be replaced, or else I could risk injuring myself – something I can’t afford. Just look at the picture below, I’ve had some major heel rubbing issue. I guess I’m still a heel striker no matter how I try to do the “pose method of running”.
OLD White Lunar Trainer reaching 400miles:
The Lunar Trainers were one of the best running shoes I’ve ever bought. There’s no need to fix what isn’t broken, so I’ve decided to buy a pair of LT’s again. Lucky me, Nike has just released a redesigned version of the Lunar Trainer – in Black color! I don’t know what it is with Black these days… black emo and gothic fashion, black “ninja” running apparels (which are dangerous), and now the Black Lunar Trainers. Does it have something to do with the new president? Well, whatever it is, I think black is sexy, beautiful and powerful.
However in reality, the shoes I’ve bought are actually more dark-grey than black. What I like about it is how it blends with asphalt when I road-run.

Other than the color, I think Nike has made some subtle modifications for this new LT’s. The soft spongy ride now feels stiffer and springy. And now there’s a heel-notch, maybe to satisfy some runners complaining their LT’s heels were rubbing against their Achilles Tendon. However, for me after a 15Mile long run, my Achilles were sore. I don’t know if it’s because of the shoes or the long run. I’ve read some tips in runnersworld.com where some users have cut the heel notch further to alleviate their sore Achilles. I guess it’s better be the shoes or my Achilles, which they say could take months to heal.
Do you see the difference?
Better be my shoes than my heels…

Wow shoes. Wow legs.
>hahaha! baka naman wow hairs!!! By the way, have you noticed elite male runners have little or no hairs on their legs? Do they actually shave them?
>oo nga, pero wala kasi akong makitang grey sa store.nike.com, so I assumed it’s black. Black sounds better than grey. Grey sounds boring….. Ha? Ano ka, pulubing may Garmin? Hahaha!
nice shoes! mas gusto ko yung black. pwede ba yan sa plantar ko?
>magaling na ba plantar mo? Siguro kasi flexible sya parang nike free. Try mo suotin at itakbo-takbo sa shop…

>Sir Patrick, thanks for visiting my blog. I guess the black lunars can be added to your vast running shoe collection!
By the way, in your experience, how many miles does your running shoes usually last before you replace them.
Ey Natz! How is this one performing? My boss is raving raving raving endlessly about his new lunars claiming it cut his half mara time by 5 minutes (wow, matingnan nga)…and yes i plan to buy a new pair anyway…
>Hi Lauren, how are my lunars performing? Well, these are my 2nd pair of Lunars because the first pair were perfect!!! I used to wear a very light mizuno wave precision that made me run faster. When I bought my first lunars, it was surprisingly even lighter! And more comfortable too! If you have perfect feet – no pronation problem, or if you have slightly arched feet, or you’re very light, then the Lunars are recommended for you. The effect of having lighter shoes is a faster leg turn-over rate, though this could also tire you if you do too much. Therefore, faster racing times.
For me, the most amazing thing about the Lunars is its cushioning. It feels like out of this world cushioning, like running on pillows. You would really appreciate it if you run on concrete or asphalt roads. It’s very hard to describe, that you really have to put them on and try them for yourself. It’s really perfect for long distance running, for some even for the ultra-marathon. I think it’s even better than the old “air” by nike. However the cushioning seems to degrade after 300miles or 480Kms for me, but I was able to use them up to 400Miles (640Kms). It really depends on your running style and body weight.
I recommend you go to a nike store and try a pair of them. Hold one of the shoe and compare its weight with your current running shoe. Then wear them and run around the store. Don’t worry if people look at you like you’re crazy running around the store. If you like the shoes, just tell them you’re lunatic and deserve these looney shoes.
Woah — ok ok i’ll check it out…
Great critique, very detailed! =)
first of all, the lunartrainer was what got me hooked to running. but after the first 200kms, i already found the cushioning dead. for a shoe this expensive, i thought it should have lasted longer. i also felt that my knees started to hurt during some of my runs. i went back to nb. i found out the hard way that stability and control is much more important than cushioning. if your leg pains persist, try out another shoe. especially if you are training for a marathon and logging in the miles.
>Thanks for the feedback. Is your lunartrainer the white or the black one? I agree with you on the 200Kms, my white lunar trainer’s cushioning was too soft that after 300Kms, it was really too soft. My new black lunars are stiffer though, and I now have 320Kms on it and they’re still OK.
I also agree on you on the stability part. After a few hundred kilometers, the stability does deteriorate. Good thing I think I have perfect feet and I’m not experiencing any problems. I do have Achilles, ITBS and knee pains, but they’re mostly too much training and due to banked roads that even perfect stability shoes aren’t the solution, but very gentle gradual increase in mileage and intensity.
hey natz, craig logan here. I’m the “old man” running with his son, Justin.
Shoes look great. Where’s the best place to purchase? What’s the best price you’ve found? See you at Condura.
Craig
Hi Craig, how are you? Nope, you don’t look old at all. Are you sure you’re “old”? Right now it seems that nike stores are getting out of stock even in Bonifacio High Street and in Glorietta. I saw some stocks in Festival Mall in Alabang, but I haven’t checked the northern parts of Metro Manila. I remember there were still some stocks in Podium in Ortigas. I’m thinking of buying another pair (would be my third lunar, am I crazy?) to avail of the 10% discount courtesy of Condura 1/2 Marathon. My current lunars have 350miles and I don’t think they can make it to the Milo 42K.
My gray lunar trainers are getting old, my running store has told me they have been discontinued. Bummer!! I’m trying to locate any color size 7 women out there. Anybody out there- can you help?
