With 3 days to go till Marathon…

…I’m tapering.

In less than 3 days, I’ll be 30years and 3days old, and I’ll be joining Milo’s 33rd Marathon. This would be my Marathon debut, and I’ll be proud to be called a “Marathon Runner” or “Marathoner”. I will then have my certificate laminated on wood and displayed on my office cubicle as a proud achievement.

In the past, I would be contented just to finish one, but the sub-4hours qualifying time gave me a challenge to train harder. Why do it? Because it’s there.

So these past 6months have been concentrated in training for a decent marathon time. Everything was perfect until 2 days ago when I caught some throat infection and runny nose, probably got it from my father. I was a little devastated that despite all the preparation, I wasn’t able to avoid this minor disease that could affect my running. I was worried that this could last till Sunday and would weaken me to run the full 26.2 miles.

Well after 2days I got stronger, I felt better, and the runny nose isn’t running anymore, but my throat is still a little itchy. I ran an easy 4miler yesterday but a surprisingly fast pace at a very easy effort. Decreasing my mileage this week really rested my legs that they now have a lot of energy and strength in them. I still plan to run.. i mean easy jog a 2miler tomorrow. Then as Vener advised, I will try to remember to keep my body as horizontal as much as possible.

Then I need to try to eat a lot of carbohydrates tomorrow till Saturday… Oh no, I forgot, I need to carbo-load right now! I believe the right time is 3days before the marathon. Good thing I wrote this blog. I’ll head to the cafeteria to eat some Filipino Pancit (noodles) to get some Filipino Carbs.

Another issue I find is the weather. I find it really hard to run fast in hot weather. So if it’ll be hot come race day, I will need to wear a pair of sunglasses after 7:30AM when it’ll be really hot. By that time, I’ll just try to hang-on to my pace and see if I could run a Sub-4hour. But if the temperature remains below 27′C or if it rains well, I’ll be happy to target 3:45 as I’ve been trained to run with my Marathon program :-)

Ayos, with SIX months of training and preparation, you’re good to go. You have until thursday to plan your race strategies, friday until race day, you should free your mind from this marathon thing. Rest easy.

you seem to have really worked hard for this event, and i really hope that it pays off on race day. not to add any pressure, but with your 20 mile times, you do seem like a “shoo-in” for the Finals. Nevertheless, good luck!

Thanks for your kind words Sir.

Like Vener, Wayne, Rico, and the rest of Metro Manila runners said, Milo Marathon to us is what Boston Marathon is to Americans. Even if I’m just going to join a 5K Milo event, I’ll train hard and run hard. :-)

    Hi Natz,
Good luck on your maiden marathon. Six months is a lot of work, you deserve to get your prize.

And happy birthday! Hmmm, our birthday is a day apart, forget about the years =). Cheers man!

    Hi Jay, thanks!

Actually it was your blog about last year’s Milo Elims when you hit the wall that drove me to train hard. The way you described the wall scared the heck out of me. But 1 year later your blogs show you’ve transformed into a much powerful lean mean running machine. I hope to reach your current level maybe next year. Good luck to you and may you have an amazing second marathon!

  17. i2runner says:

Thanks Wayne, I can’t believe I’m finally going to be a marathon runner! Will let you know how we do then.

  18. i2runner says:

I see! So advanced or belated (?), Happy birthday to you too!

Six months is not a lot of work. What I’ve done for the past six months, I plan to continue for the next 30years, until I reach 60. Then I’ll go to a doctor to see if I could still run for another 30years. :-)
