adidas KOTR 2009 race report – running the extra mile!

Start of the 6.41K race

I think a few weeks ago a lot of runners were very disappointed with this 21K local race being short by 3Kms. Now adidas KOTR 2009 seems to have addressed this issue in their 5K race by adding an extra mile (actually, just 0.87mile, I’m just exaggerating). This is probably what they call “exceeding the customer’s expectations”. The total distance was 6.41Kms! Great job done by the race marshals and the organizers. This is great for beginners, who used to run/walk the 5K race who have now without realizing that they have ran 6.41Kms.

My official time for the 6.41K race was 29′51.6″. Luckily, I’ve set my splits to Kilometers instead of Miles, so I was able to get my 5K split to be 23′16.4″, my new 5K PR for the year!

After 4Kms, I was ready to run really fast, I felt really great, the temperature was perfect, but the finish line seemed to be too far from where I was. I felt something was wrong, so I took it easy for the next 5th Kilometer where I obviously slowed down. I had to run another mile although I was already exhausted. From the looks of it, I could have broken 23minutes only if the distance was correct. I would have sprinted the last 400 to 100meters, like I did in this 6.41K race.

Anyway, I wasn’t seriously seeking for a 5K PR today knowing I’m out of shape. But if I did, I would probably have:
1) Stopped at the 5K point and just jog or walk to the finish line.
2) Stopped at the 5K point and just take a taxi or bus to the finish line.
3) Run the course at least 1 week ahead of schedule, to really familiarize myself with the official race course. So when it comes to the race itself, I don’t have to follow what the race marshals have to say.

Meanwhile, today was Beth’s 21Km race debut. She ran 16kms last week in training, so it looks like she’s really ready for this, and she even rested well 3days ago. She carbo-loaded last night, and she just looks very fit and gorgeous. Then she finished the 21K today in less than 2:23′45″! Not bad for a first timer. Now she wants to train for the Condura 42K on February 7th, 2010!

When we were about to go home, we were able to spot a celebrity in Bonifacio High Street doing his long run, probably training for a Marathon.

Sir Jason, thanks! Sayang sana nga kung totoong 5K, pwede pa kong mag sprint sa last 400meters. Pero 1.4Kms pa yung natitira, di ko kayang isprint yun! hehehe.

Idol Vener, oo nga, ang bilis ni Beth for a newbie! She’s flying nga! hehehe.

  6. jazzrunner says:

Wow, i wonder why they added that extra 1.41kms to the original 5k route. baka na mis-communicate sa marshals. Thanks for pointing this out.

I knew it! I wasn’t so sure whether the distance was too long or I was just ill-prepared for yesterday’s run. Thanks for pointing this out.

I’m semi-new to running, have joined 5k runs for a while now, but no 10k yet. At least I know that I’m nearing 10k na. Hehehe…

  19. Anne says:

hey thanks for visiting my blog and mostly thanks for this very very impt trivia!

imagine… i was pushed to run the whole of 6.41k! eh the first and last running event i attended was at 3k lang… i’m soooo lazy but knowing it was at 6.41, i’m now inspired :)

  20. Woah! Hahaha exceeding customer expectations :P Awesome split Natz, you’re back! :)

  21. i2runner says:

Taki – Thanks! everybody who finished got a 6.41K PR! yehey! Congrats to your very fast 21K debut!

Sir Jovie, Junrox, and Luis – I’m sorry but I’m not really back. Well, my ITBS is back because one night I forgot to self-deep massage them because they felt fine. The next day they became too tight, and when I ran a fast downhill during training, the darn ITBS just came back. So I was quite surprised to get a fast 5K. Probably because of the cooler weather, or maybe the cooler yellow coloured singlet? But now I’m learning to love the 5K fast race. I’m probably a more natural 5K runner…

Anne, Lara, thanks for visiting my blog as well :-) and congrats to your 6.41K PRs! apir! but too bad you have no idea what your 5K times were. Hope to see you again in the next 5K races :-)

Idol XTY, it was nice talking to a fast marathoner as well. Thanks for your words of wisdom. You and Beth should talk together, she should get some tips from you as a girl, to run her first marathon.

Hi Alfred, damn it, natutulala ako sa tankad mo bro :-) do you also play basketball?

Dennis, yup, just imagine, I ran the 5K in 23minutes, while Beth ran the 21K in 23minutes and 2hours! I had to wait for her for 2hours…

  22. Alfred says:

Natulala ka na, napamura ka pa… ha ha…
I did basketball, volleyball, bowling, chess, skiing, table tennis, badminton, sipa and syatong years ago… he he
Got hooked to tennis 5 years ago so I mostly play tennis now. When I’m not training for a marathon of course.
    What about you? :-)

  23. alaskarunner says:

I have already sent you your pictures. By the way, did you know I finished behind you? Here’s the result from adidas (I’m the 8942, too bad they didn’t know my name):

  27. alaskarunner says:

I was chasing a female runner with bib no. 9320 up to the half km when one male runner overtook me. But the result showed more than one male runner ahead of me. My GPS result was 28:08 but the posted time was 29:56. I was running 6:33.35 on my first mile,2nd mile was 7:03.34,3rd mile was 7:12.34 and my last lap was 7:19.21 . After the 3rd mile I found out that the finish line was nowhere in sight and that was when I started to slow down. I was hoping they get the resut right.
