(Pictures thanks to Iris Camille Mejia-Acosta and Queenie Gavan)
Last Saturday I was invited by Dincee Caluag of Green Bulb PR to join the adidas’ miCoach treadmill challenge, where we would run for 10minutes on the treadmill, and then the top 3 runners who could run the farthest would win the following prizes:
1st prize: miCoach Pacer
2nd prize: miCoach Zone
3rd prize: adidas Running products

Again, adidas is really creative in promoting their new miCoach product. The miCoach Pacer had an accelerometer that could be attached to the shoes to measure distance, speed and time run, while the miCoach Zone had a Heart Rate Monitor. Both products uses ANT+ wireless protocol (like in Garmin) for reliable and interference free communication of the gadgets. It then feeds the information to your earphones, like someone or like a coach telling you to run faster, or slower, or farther, or to stop running.

I drooled when I heard about this device so I joined the treadmill challenge, where we had to run for 10minutes on the treadmill. I was then pulled by the race assistants to go to the stage as the first to run on the treadmill. Just my luck, that means whatever distance I run, I will be at the most unfair disadvantage since everybody will know what distance I just ran, then all they have to do is chase it.

Anyhow, I decided to stop whining and run the best 10minutes I could on the treadmill. I felt really nervous when I walked up the stage unto the treadmill, seeing a lot of eyes looking back up at me. I thought to myself, what did I get myself into? But then after 5minutes of warm-up, I got used to it.

i2runner running 16 to 18Kph?!

I then set the treadmill to 16KPH for the first 8minutes. The treadmill felt awkward, it wasn’t like the high-end treadmills in fitness-first; there was a huge braking effect on the belt if you heel-strike, and there were no safety strings to turn it off in case you fall down, so I had to put one hand on the bar in case of emergency.

After 5minutes of running, I could feel myself sweating hard, and my mouth and throat was so dry, I realized I should have drunk a little water before running. For the last 2minutes, I tried setting the treadmill to 20KPH, but it could only go up to 18KPH. I was losing my running form and was breathing real hard and tried to take my mind of the time.

In the end, after 10minutes my distance was 2.7kms. The average pace was 3:42/km or 5:58/mile, for the 2.7km or 1.69mile distance. I could never run that fast in real life. This was faster than my 6:17 mile oval-track PR. I guess treadmill running is indeed easier than real road or track running. When I stepped out of the treadmill, I felt dizzy as expected in all treadmill running, the people around Bonifacio High Street who stopped walking/shopping just to watch me run for 10 boring minutes, clapped their hands for me. Now that was a really satisfying and priceless experience after an exhausting run

Below is the video of my 10minute run at 3:42/km or 5:58/mile pace. Thanks to Beth for the Video and Sam for cheering-asar.

What? Boring? Here’s a sample of Wilnar… I mean Haile Gebrselassie’s 4-minute mile (2:30/km) treadmill run. He’s just awesome to look at. We did have something in common – a yellow adidas singlet Also, he places his hands on the bars of the treadmill for balance.

But of course, Haile doesn’t need any miCoach device. We mortals need it to run ourselves better though. Unfortunately with my 2.7kms, I only placed 3rd and got an adidas backpack what seems to be for cycling. All I need to do now is to buy a bicycle. The second placer Mike Mamaril ran a total of 2.71kms and got a miCoach heart rate monitor, also a nice cool gadget for running. Wilnar Iglesia won the race with d=2.89kms and got the coveted miCoach pacer. By making us run race for this, adidas just made the miCoach pacer even more valuable, expensive, my precious….

Sam The Running Ninja ran 2.24kms and Argo ran a whopping 2.42kms, though both of them are tired just a weak from BDM102. Kikay Runner ran 2.4kms, she would have won the women’s category if it existed, but unfortunately it didn’t.

In order to run a faster 5K someday, one of takbo.ph’s speed king Ritchie Alava advised me to buy racing flats. Shoes that first came to my mind were adizero rocket, RC, PRO, and mizuno ronin and musha. These racing flats look really hot and light, but they also look like I could only wear them for 5K’s as long as I run them really fast, I should be OK. Fair enough. Thinking these racing flats were all equally unstable with minimal support, cushioning, and weight, I would have to choose the lightest of them all. So I googled, and was surprised with what I’ve found. Below is the table of my compilation of racing flats weight comparison, in size9:

I initially wanted the hot-looking adizero rocket, but when I saw that the lightest racing flat was the Mizuno Wave Universe 3, I tried to contact Mizuno locally but got no response. Then the next lightest racing flat was the Lunar Racer! I got so excited and called Nike Bonifacio High Street and spoke to someone by the name of “Mutya”, and she told me they have all sizes available. I remembered about 6months ago that they didn’t have anymore stock of these, so I knew they were endangered. I quickly went to their store as soon as I could commute from work.

First Impressions
When I held the shoes in my hands, they felt like I was holding styrofoams! They were incredibly light. I got the size 9.5-US, and the forefoot were really snug-tight, my toes had no room to move at all. However, the tight toes seem to support my forefoot, I thought these are going to be great for forefoot sprinting, great for 5K finishing kicks. I read somewhere that tight narrow forefoot shoes are typical of racing flats. The heel is noticeably lower too, therefore the heel-to-toe difference seems minimal, hence the name “flats”. However, the shoes look so meek, unlike the agressive looking Mizuno Ronins and Musha.

Test Run
These ultra-light shoes seems to allow me to increase my leg-turnover rate therefore increasing my pace significantly with less effort. I feel I was about 30seconds/mile faster with these ultra-light flats. The cushioning is superior, they feel as soft and comfortable as the Lunar Trainers and Glides. Of course, they have the same Lunarlite foam. The ability to run fast with these shoes became so addicting that even during easy/recovery runs, I was running at 5K race pace. Days later, I got sick with coughs and colds because of not slower on easy days. (Actually I even ran hard on Christmas morning with these shoes when I was already sick, just because they were temptingly good. Please don’t tell anyone.)

I didn’t like the flywire, because I had high bony arches that gets hurt with too much pressure on the flywire. I bypass these flywires with my lacing technique.

But after 3 days with these racers, I developed blisters on my forefoot and little toe due to rubbing. I guess these shoes does need to get proper breaking-in.

42K racing flats?
The cushioning’s so soft, they’re unlike most minimalist racing flats that have intimidatingly thin cushioning that seems to break your legs if you run the marathon. After all, even Haile Gebrselassie’s adizero adios isn’t a racing flat but a lightweight performance trainer. I wonder how well he’ll race with the lunar racers. When I thought racing flats, I thought of only 5K’s and 10K’s. Now after trying these shoes, I’m convinced I’ll wear them on 42K races. After all, these are the shoes Duncan Kibet wore in the Rotterdam Marathon (3rd fastest Marathon of all time), Dathan Ritzenhein in the Beijing 2008 Marathon, Kara Goucher in NY and Boston Marathons, and BaldRunner in Milo 42K finals.

Racers vs Trainers
There have been reports of some runners preferring the racers over the racers even during their training workouts including long runs. There are even reports in the forums of the racers even reaching 1,000miles! I don’t know if they’re true, but the racers does seem to threaten the trainers in my daily run. The following are the comparisons:

Weight (my weighing scale can’t detect the racers!)

There are more BRS1000 Outsole Black Rubber. This makes the racer more durable for longer mileage, and better traction for greater acceleration. There are also smaller lugs or “waffles” that makes the racer better for wet running.

The Racer has a more narrow forefoot, unlike the roomier trainer.

The racer has a lower heel, but not significantly, so its mileage is probably going to be the same, if not better than the trainer.

PROs:
Ultra-Lightweight – Lightest Running Shoe available in Metro Manila as of this writing (unless Mizuno releases the Wave Universe 3). I hope I could run a sub-20minute 5K someday with these racers.
Great Cushioning – Just like the Lunar Trainers. Will not kill you for races longer than 10K, unlike other intimidating racing flats out there.
Excellent Forefoot Support – What a racing flat should be.
Marathon Racing Flats – Bald Runner has run a 3:48 marathon with these flats.

CONs:
Not for everyone – it doesn’t have the arch support or motion control needed by over-pronators. You can try inserting orthotics though.
Narrow forefoot – wide footed runners may need to choose 1/2 to 1.0 size higher to accomodate wider forefoot, but this may add additional weight, defeating the purpose of weigh reduction. Lunar Trainers are a good alternative.
Cushioning too soft?- May be undesirable for heavier runners. Lightweight runners can enjoy this.
Boring design – it doesn’t look like a kick-ass racing shoe like adizero rocket or mizuno ronin2.
Endangered Specie- These are becoming rare, I only found this in Nike Bonifacio High Street after waiting for months, with an expensive price tag of P5,500.00.

Conclusion and Recommendation:
Recommended for narrow-footed lightweight runners who want to run faster with no over-pronation problems. The shoes also needs some time for proper breaking-in, or else suffer some blisters during the race. You may also want to wait next for year, there is a coming Lunar Racer2 rumored to be available in 2010, slightly heavier though. Probably a strand of hair heavier.

Other Lunar Racer reviews:

Last Friday while chatting on takbo.ph’s shoutbox, “Winceth” (Patrick) asked a question on how to edit the data taken from garmin. Then “Crashandburn” (Neil Barrios) informed us that we could actually open Garmin’s data from Garmin Training Center® by first exporting a run or workout and then saving it as *.tcx file.

Highlight the race/workout desired, then click:
File–>Export–>Export “<date> ”

Then save the file as *.tcx.

This *.tcx file could then be opened by Microsoft Excel. It was so simple, why didn’t I try that before? Now our race or training data could be better manipulated, analyzed and graphed with excel. The tables need a little getting used to. One of the columns have data for distance traveled in meters, and there’s another column for the time (with date). Other columns have additional data for Heart Rate, Longitude, Lattitude & Altitude, while the rest I still don’t know what they’re for. You will need a little crunching to get the time interval between difference in intervals to get the speed, and you’ll just need to convert it to pace/mi or pace/km with some common sense formulas.

What I didn’t like in Garmin’s software was its inability to zoom into the paces or limit the graph’s Y-axis pace. For instance, my marathon pace was around 9minutes/mile, but due to the noises and spikes of garmin, I had some readings at 17minute/mile pace so the Y-axis of the graph would reach that point. Therefore, I couldn’t zoom or look closer to 9min/mile of the graph. This is the reason why I didn’t post this graph on my Milo Marathon blog. I will use this technique next time.

Now compare the two graphs below from the same race. The first one is the raw graph from garmin connect, where it shows the slowest pace I had was 17min/mile.

connect.garmin.com

Now I don’t care about that, I would rather zoom to the relevant pace by limiting the maximum of Y-axis of the graph to 11min/mile, and the minimum to 4min/mile. Then I only took the kilometer splits to get a cleaner data. Now the difference is shown below. Doesn’t it look cleaner and more understandable?

EXCELLent!!!

Thanks to takbo.ph’s shoutbox chatroom and to Neil and Patrick, I am now able to better understand my workout to the smallest resolution of Garmin Forerunner 405, which I think is approximately 5-second interval data-points.

Please feel free to comment if you need clarifications or some techniques in manipulating your graph data. You can also email me at zixednatz@gmail.com, I’m just glad to be of any help

adidas ClimaCool 365 TEE Product Review

In the past, I really never cared what I wore when I ran, normally just use an old beat-up shirt and rip-off the sleeves. Now that the running scene in Metro Manila is full of runners and races–in all shapes, sizes, and distances, I notice that it’s the newbies that mostly wear the free singlets, while most seasoned runners would often be found wearing branded fashionable high-tech running apparels. And among all the sport-apparel brands, I think the best in fashion should go to adidas. I mean, for example, nothing could be simply more stylish than their 3-stripe design, it looks really great on their jacket sleeves. 2 is too little, while 4 is too much. 3 is perfect. If you ever visit the adidas Trinoma Branch you’ll appreciate their sports fashion.

Last week adidas delivered to me a grey colored “ClimaCool 365 TEE” shirt for review, opened the package, and got excited to wear it right away. It was the most high-tech looking shirt I’ve ever seen, with fabric textures differing on one area to another. The neck and back areas were thinner and smoother while the rest were thicker and just a little bit rougher. (I thought the slogan in front “CLIMACOOL YOUR WORKOUT” just sounded cheezy). The next day, I wore it to work, curious of what my officemates would say about it. Well, all of them really liked it, that it was a great looking and fashionable shirt, and when I asked them how much they think it cost, most of them guessed it was P2,000.00. In reality, it’s just P1,295. After work, we went to play ping-pong for 3hours in Alabang, where I had to lot to sweat, but the ClimaCool helped me feel comfortable.

ClimaCooled Runner

So I did a little bit research about the ClimaCool shirt and technology, in the adidas store in MegaMall. It’s also available in white color and even in singlet, for P1,295.00. I was surprised to see that some ClimaCool are P2,000.00, even more expensive than some adidas shoes!

Now I understand the ClimaCool 365 was designed to keep us comfortable in our workouts for 365days. I wonder if it I could still use it for the 366th day… Let see… As with the other ClimaCool shirts, the fabric wicks out the heat and sweat from the skin to keep the wearer comfortable. However they had this new innovative technology at the back of the shirt that exhausts the heat from the back. The 2 kinds of ClimaCool fabrics — the smoother and thinner one, and the thicker and rougher one, are stitched into a U-shape at the back. The stitching raises the level of the thinner fabric to create an airspace with the skin for heat-convection. adidas calls this 3D fabric technology. Hotter air molecules would then travel upwards through this airspace chamber much like a chimney.

This morning the weather was quite hot and humid when I tried the ClimaCool 365 for a long run of 4miles. Ok I did a lot of walking because of my new knee injury… The ClimaCool 365 is now the coolest shirt I’ve ever worn in running, both in Form and Function! I love it more than the Milo Marathon t-shirt or my old Nike Shirt. However, it can’t replace any of my singlets, I still find it a bit warmer than any of them, probably because of the fact that it covers more of the skin. But this could be good for people who are sensitive to sunlight’s UV rays (or so tell themselves). For now, I will probably wear this for cool to moderately warm weather running, but will probably use the coolest yellow KOTR singlet for the hottest summer running.

But wait a minute… adidas didn’t say the ClimaCool 365 shirt was just for running. Turns out, this is also designed for sexy bodies in the Gym! Below are some pictures from adidas with their ClimaCool Promotion (check out that full ITB stretch):

Thirty-one-year old radio jock and health enthusiast Gelli Victor has been part of the fitness industry since 2002. With adidas ClimaCool technology, which conducts heat and sweat away from the body, Gelli achieves maximum performance in her workout. “ClimaCool® doesn’t add to the heat that my body is producing. It’s actually taking it away from my body and keeping me cool!” attests Gelli.

Gelli Victor

Wearing his ClimaCool shirt, AJ starts his yoga session, stretching and twisting his muscles in seated position. ‘Comfort and confidence are two big positives I get from my adidas outfits,’ shares AJ. ‘They feel great and they make me look good, which gives me that boost to maximize my workouts.’

AJ Galang

More on ClimaCool technology from adidas:

STAY DRY, KEEP COOL
Air-cooled training with adidas ClimaCool®

Keeping cool and dry are two of the most important factors in ensuring peak performance during workouts. Take charge of your body’s performance with adidas ClimaCool®, a new performance line, specifically engineered to optimize active performance by managing sweat and heat.

ClimaCool® is an integrated system of technologies that work together to regulate your body temperature better than any single-fabric technology can. ClimaCool® apparel conducts heat and sweat away from the body through a combination of heat and moisture-dissipating materials, ventilation channels, and 3D fabrics.

How does it work? Moisture-wicking fabrics transport moisture away from the body, keeping you cool and dry while, creating space between material and skin, 3D fabric allow cool air to circulate close to the body. Featuring hundreds of small indents on the body side of the fabric, 3D fabric also pulls sweat in all directions, both outwards from the body and across the surface of the garment. Also employed in ClimaCool® system, X-Static® or silver-coated fibers, conduct heat away from your body.

To create a more functional garment, body mapping has been used to identify key sweat and heat producing zones of the human body. By mapping the body’s critical sites, these technologies are placed exactly where they are needed, optimizing body temperature.

Want to experience ClimaCool® technology yourself? ClimaCool® your workout at Gold’s Gym! Borrow an adidas ClimaCool® gym shirt at Gold’s Gym clubs to get a cool, power-packed session.

Registering for and claiming the adidas KOTR race kits in the Megamall B Megatrade hall last week have been the worst experience I’ve ever had (at least in the world of running). Just asking for questions at the information booth induced one of the worst headaches. And among all the pains I’ve ever had encountered before, headache is the only one I could never tolerate. I have a lot of complaints, but looking back again at the adidas expo, I believe they had the best intentions for all of us runners. They planned to have a great event for us, at the expo, it just didn’t happen as they probably hoped for.

I have registered for a 5K race while Beth registered for her first 21K race. She has trained well for this, so please wish her good luck! (oh the 10K packet was for her friend. I had to go back next day just to get ours. Hassle!)

Enjoying the adidas expo

takbo.ph had a booth there, an opportunity for us to meet and discuss about the expo. (I remember how easy it was to register last year.)

Ok so now the worst is probably (or do we wish) behind all of us KOTR runners, so let us hope for the best tomorrow. For the meantime, did you all notice how awesome our new adidas singlet is? I think it is the best singlet design and quality fabric ever in both as a freebie racing singlet, or just a runner’s singlet. The colour yellow is the best for low light road running, and it should be the coolest during hot summer running. The fabric is so light that and it wicks my sweat when I tried wearing it in a morning run last Wednesday.

The Best Singlet of All Time!!!

Now adidas has also included an extra blank race bib in the race pack. I believe it’s a way to express yourself by writing anything on it, just like their current slogan, “because every runner is different”. I have been thinking of putting “i2runner.com”, but I think it would just be corny, although corn is yellow… But I thought instead of putting words, maybe symbols, logos, badges, or icons are also good ideas. To best suit the colour yellow, I imagined all famous yellow-coloured characters. The first one to come to my mind was bumblebee. So that’s it! I’ve drawn the “Autobot” face into my race bib, coloured it yellow with crayons to blend with the singlet, and viola, I AM BUMBLEBEE!!!

Autobots are the King Of The Road

I get the impression that running shoes from Newton means breakthrough, or a new invention. When they first released their first line of racers and trainers, like the Newton Gravity, it got some brows raising because they look different by adding those lugs at the soles.

Just recently, Newton released a new line of running shoes. The Sir Isaac and the Lady Isaac. They categorized them as Guidance Trainers. What’s the breakthrough with them? They can be worn by any foot types. It features a dual-density universal posting system in the midsole to help stabilize neutral runners, pronators and supinators. A one-shoe-fits-all solution.

How does the Guidance Trainer differ from the Performance Trainer? Here is how Newton shoes differentiate their products.

Beveled Heel and Toe: helps guide runner easily into the midfoot/forefoot

Beveled Lugs: smoother, stable feel that is more gradual in the forefoot

Wider midfoot/forefoot and lugs: adds stability and creates a softer feel

Midfoot Chassis/Shank: adds support and stability

Carbon Rubber Outersole: increases durability

Closed Mesh on Upper: keeps small debris out

This is the Sir Isaac Guidance Trainer. A view from the sides gives you a familiar design from the previous models. The Sir Isaac has a simple structure and very little details in the design. Airmesh have smaller holes. But I would still expect the same comfortable runs like the previous Newton shoes.

Now see the difference in the soles of the Sir Isaac. It uses the second generation actuator lugs which are more durable. This solves the common complain that the sole of Newton shoes wears out too fast.

And for the ladies, this is how Lady Isaac looks like. Just a slight change in the color. I could even wear these shoes in case I prefer a green color.

The Sir Isaac and Lady Isaac sells for 149USD thru their online store. I guess they might peg between 7,000 to 8,000 Php once they will be available locally.

Check out the Newton site for detailed description of their new shoes.

Mizuno’s Marketing Officer, Miss Jai Cortes, offered me to review their Precision 9 model. Having used the older Precision 6 model before, I knew this was a great performance training shoe–something that’s going to help me train faster and even use for racing faster marathons.

First Impressions
The Precision9 shoe looked similar to the older precision models, but the quality of material used looks even better, so now it looks flashier than ever. The fabric is breathably very thin, and has a reptilian look. Good for racing runners who are “maangas” or intimidating. It looks and feels lighter than most Mizuno Running Shoe models, but its sole has more cushioning and support than their racing flats. And the smell–mmmmm! I don’t know what it is, but Mizuno Stores and Running shoes have this distinct nice smell in them that makes me want to buy their shoes.

The WAVE
What I like about Mizuno Running Shoes is their “wave” technology. It absorbs the vertical shock of the foot by dissipating it sideways, and the absorption transition is very smooth from heel to forefoot. However when I tried the new P9, I immediately felt an improved support. When I examined the “Wave”, it looks like they used 2 different materials–the medial(inner) has a wave stiffer material than the lateral(outer) wave. This should help control pronation for most runners.

Test Run
I was able to run 4miles(6kms) yesterday and 6miles(9Kms) this morning at faster paces than usual, without any issue. The shoes were really light and so responsive on the road that it’s really a runner’s running shoe. The wave gave a smooth controlled pronation from heel to toe. It’s great for heel and midfoot strikers. The forefoot is also flexible enough to do some forefoot running as well. The only problem I saw was when I temporarily ran on a wet side of road, it felt a little slippery. The wet traction is mediocre–I believe the Mizuno Elixir would perform better than this with its unique pimpled treads.
Running 9.63Kms @ 5:16/km pace

The Older Precision Models
Precision 6
I used to have the Mizuno Wave Rider 7 when I was heavier, but after losing 35pounds (due to running and healthy diet), the lighter Precision6 model helped me to run faster.

Precision 8
Jay Nacino aka Prometheus Cometh was able to run a fast 3:37 marathon with the older Precision 8 model.

Conclusion
The Mizuno Wave Precision 9 is a great lightweight performance training shoe recommended for lightweight runners who want to train and race faster. It has enough durability and support to run a full Marathon. Mild over-pronators could benefit from the newly improved medial support.

About Mizuno
Being a fan of Mizuno, I’ve interviewed Miss Jai about Mizuno Running Philippines via email:
1. What is your job in Mizuno?
Marketing Officer for Running

2. How long have you been working in Mizuno?
Just a little bit over a month but I’ve been using Mizuno for my other sports even before

3. What is Mizuno-Philippines’ Mission and Vision for Running, if any?
I don’t think we have, but our goal is to make runners understand their needs when it comes to their running shoes and apparels. We don’t want to push our products just for the sake of pushing it, seriously. We don’t like to compete head on with the marketing strategy of other brands, because people who go there, I’m not stereotyping, but most of them are after the looks. So it’s like if you want a running shoe, go for other “good looking” brands, but if you need a running shoe, go for Mizuno.

4. Mizuno has been winning a lot of the coveted Runnersworld Magazine’s “Editor’s Award” a lot over the years. What does Mizuno Running Shoes have that other brands don’t have?
Some shoes would offer stability, some would offer cushioning, but our award winning shoes, they offer both. We take into consideration almost every inch of detail when it comes to the needs of the runners and then we incorporate it in redesigning our technologies. We have shoes with sole that still grips well even if the surface is wet, then one of our new technology makes sure that the shoes doesn’t open while you run. We have those technologies for those little details that you really don’t take into consideration as a runner, but once you realize it, yeah nga you need it. Check out our website www.mizuno.ph or check www.mizuno.eu for more info on all the technologies in our shoes.

5. I noticed a distinct chemical smell/scent every time I go to any Mizuno store. Other running stores don’t have it. Do you know what it is?
Air freshener I guess we like to standardize things so what we do in our main office, we have to do for all stores, so that our own stores won’t be competing with each other. Its hard kasi to whenever a customer comes to one of our stores and say “bat sa megamall ganito, bat sa trinoma iba” it backfires eh. So as much as we can we want to standardize things para, whenever you enter a Mizuno store, you know right away that you’ve just entered a Mizuno store.

6. What is Mizuno’s best selling running shoe model?
Last year it was our Wave Rider, but now all our neutrals really sell, like Creation, Precision, and Rider. But now our racing flats are also in demand, so it’s hard to tell which is the best selling running shoe model maybe by end of the year I can give you which was the best
